What Do You Know About Condoms?  How About the Latex Condom?

If you think that all condoms are created equal, then you’d be wrong. And when it comes to condoms, being wrong not only increases the risks of an unwanted pregnancy, but the wrong information also increases your chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). So let’s start with the most important question. Which condoms are the least likely to break during use? The answer? Latex condoms!

Of the various materials used to make condoms, latex condoms are the least likely to break during usage. But "least likely" does not mean "guaranteed not to break" so always use caution. Studies show that a latex condom is likely to break or slip off anywhere from 2% to 6% of the time. That means you are at risk of suffering a condom "malfunction" two to six times out of every 100 times you have intercourse.

Do you know what can actually increase the above percentages? You should, or you put yourself and your partner at increased risk. Using an oil or petroleum-based lubricant with latex condoms can actually cause condoms to weaken and break. Before applying a lubricant, make sure it’s one that is made specifically for use with latex condoms.

Although condoms are an effective birth control device, they are not 100% effective, which is why you should also consider using a spermicide during vaginal intercourse. If you’ve been using latex condoms and you’ve developed a rash, or unexplainable burning and/or itching sensation, it might be that you are allergic to latex products. If you’re not allergic to latex, but you’re still suffering these symptoms, check to see if the latex condoms you’re using contain a spermicide, as this might be the culprit.

While wearing latex condoms is 1000% safer than not wearing condoms, the bottom line is that unprotected sex is not safe unless you are in a monogamous relationship with a partner monogamous relationship with a partner that has been tested for sexually transmitted diseases and if you are not ready for the responsibility of parenthood.  May be it is time re-think your sexual lifestyle and understand the great importance of condoms, how they work, and what different types are out there.
